Subject: Apple cranks up its product line
Date: Mon, 18 May 92 13:52:20 PDT
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple Computer Inc. unveiled an upgraded
computer system Monday, the first such announcement since the company
set out to speed up introduction of the latest technical advancements in
higher-priced products.
The system -- the Macintosh Quandra 950 -- is 30 percent faster than
earlierQuadra models, which were introduced just last October at the
Comdex show in Las Vegas.
``There has always been a rush to get advancements in lower-priced
products to the market, while the high-end products have been allowed to
languish for months,'' said John Cook, an Apple spokesman. ``What Apple
is saying with this introduction is that those day are over.''
Cook said it normally took advances in high-end products as long as
two years before they appeared in the marketplace.
``We are shooting to make that six months to nine months for minor
changes, and just a year for major re-designs,'' the spokesman said.
``We feel we have to do this to maintain our place in this market
becuase it changes so quickly.''
Apple believes the Macintosh Quadra 950, built around the 33MHz
Motorola 68040 microprocessor, integrates more standard features than
any other personal computer available in the PC industry.
``With the introduction of the Macintosh Quadra line last fall, we
took a significant step towards fulfilling the needs of customers with
complex computing requirements,'' said Fred Forsyth, senior vice
president and general manager of the Macintosh Hardware Division. ``The
new Macintosh Quadra 950 offers even higher performance and
functionality, yet retains all the ease-of-use features Macintosh
customers have come to expect.''
But the new system -- priced between $7,000 and $10,000 -- is not for
the average hacker. It is designed with industry in mind and should
handle any demands from publishing, graphic art, architectural and
scientific research and development firms.
``It's an excellent choice for publishers and media integration
professionals who need one computer that can rapidly handle everything
from large document management and word processing to complex graphics,
video, animation and sound,'' Forsyth said. ``It also performs very well
in architectural and engineering settings where high-speed 3D modeling,
rendering and graphics simulation tasks are often needed.''
While announcing the new line, Apple also said it was going to cut
the price of the Quadra 700 computers by as much as 8.8 percent. It also
announced that Quadra 900 owners could upgrade to the Quadra 950 by
having a new logic board installed by an Apple authorized reseller.
In the United States, Apple will offer special pricing to users
upgrading from the Quadra 900 to the Quadra 950. Apple expects the
upgrade kits to be available in the United States in early July.
